Expanding Lenora’s World -
Lenora, 62, was living with multiple sclerosis and came to our center in need of a power wheelchair. Her disease had progressed to the point that she could not walk distances much further than those inside her home. Because she could get around inside her home, Medicare would not provide a power wheelchair because the diagnosis needed for approval requires that the chair be essential for getting from place to place inside the home. However, like most people who come to us looking for power wheelchairs and scooters, Lenora needed it to extend her range outside the home for a better quality of life.
Of course, her finances were very tight: due to her disease, she had to quit work much earlier than she wanted to. This meant her retirement income was less because she had fewer income-producing years in her history for social security, and fewer years to save to supplement her social security. In addition to a limited income, her expenses were much greater due to her MS which requires more doctor appointments, more expensive medicines, etc. Needless to say, she was joyful to find a power wheelchair that fit her and have it delivered to her home for a relatively small donation.
