A Small Act of Kindness for the Brightest Smile: A Smile Story
A young family from Alaska recently experienced an unexpected act of kindness while in Seattle for their daughter’s medical care.

The Johnsons* were in town for their little girl Emma’s* appointment at Seattle Children’s. Afterward, they stopped by our Meyer Medical Equipment Center to pick up a mobility trainer for Emma — joyful, cheerful, and one of the most delightful 8 year olds you could ever meet. Her sunny smile and curiosity filled the room!
While waiting, they began chatting with an elderly couple who were there to pick up a walker and other mobility aids.
During their conversation, the families discovered a surprising connection: the couple had lived for several years in the very same Alaska town where the Johnsons currently reside.
What began as a friendly conversation quickly turned into something more. When the family learned that the trainer was provided through donations and that families could contribute if they were able, the elderly couple quietly offered to cover the suggested donation amount themselves.
The gesture left the young family deeply moved.
For our team at Bridge, moments like these highlight the spirit of giving that sustains our mission.
“These are the stories that remind us why community support matters,” a staff member shared. “Each donation — whether financial or simply a kind word — makes a difference for families like the Johnsons.”
