Celebrating Our Victories
Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you…
It was *Rebecca’s birthday. That February afternoon, Suzy, our Guardianship Agency Director, video-called Rebecca to greet her on her special day. Rebecca had been tipped by her caregiver that it was Suzy’s birthday too. And in her sweet Rebecca way, she began singing the birthday song, bringing love and giggles all around!
Certainly, the pandemic has been an adjustment for all, with many of us exposed to persistent stressors. We know we must help our clients build and strengthen their resilience by piling on positive experiences. It is frustrating not to be able to visit in person. Thankfully, an act as simple as a video call goes a long way in soothing the soul.
Prior to Covid, *Edward enjoyed going out three to four times a week for church and daily activities. When the pandemic struck we wanted to make sure he wouldn’t feel like he was missing out on a routine so we steered him towards activities that take place right there where he lived in his assisted living facility. Since then, Edward has made many friends. His days are filled with coloring books, arts & crafts, puzzles and calls from us!
Someone who has really surprised us is a client named *George. George is non-speaking and would usually scream when he saw us. We weren’t sure exactly how he’d react on a video call. So it was indeed a happy surprise when on our first call he smiled and laughed and waved! It was hard not to laugh along with him. The Guardianship team member on call with him exclaimed, “George you actually miss me? I can’t believe it! I miss you too.” George beamed from ear to ear.
And so did we.
*all names have been changed to respect the privacy of our clients.
