Continuing the Adventure: A Story from the MMEC

When we met them, Sharron and Bob had been married for 57 adventure-filled years. The devoted pair had enjoyed a lifetime of companionship, doing “everything together,” as Sharron put it, from hiking, biking, and camping to volunteering. The years were beginning to catch up though, with Sharron’s activities hampered by complications from asthma and osteoarthritis in her hip. Ever the caring partner, Bob was more than willing to help her get around, but both found that the need for him to pilot her transport chair was lessening her independence and placing limits on activities for them both.

Unwilling to give up on adventuring together, the pair made a trip to the Meyer Medical Equipment Center. There, we were able to set Sharron up with a 4-wheel Go-Go scooter that was simple enough for Bob to take apart in less than a minute and light enough for him to load into their trunk with ease. Having a portable scooter has opened up possibilities that had been closed to them for some time, allowing Sharron to navigate independently and Bob to continue exploring the world with his life companion at his side.

Scooters like Sharron’s are vital tools for preserving independence and quality of life for many individuals with disabilities, allowing them to remain active members of their communities, handle tasks of daily living, and continue activities that bring them joy. Unfortunately, these scooters, which retail for around $1,000, are financially out of reach for many people and Medicare doesn’t cover motorized equipment if the individual has even a limited ability to navigate their home without an electric wheelchair.

Bridge, and the MMEC, are proud to serve as a vital link between people like Sharron and the equipment they need to remain active and get the most out of life.
