Do More… Serve More
Gerry, a long-time team member and former supervisor of our MMEC , brings the phrase “work from home” to a whole new level with two (soon to be three!) equipment stations and several Bridge volunteers set up in his garage.
During quarantine last year, Gerry was restricted to remote work and volunteers in the high risk category had to stop working altogether. Knowing there was a great need for equipment, Gerry began converting the inside of his garage into a large workspace in August 2020. Since September 2020, this new, private location has allowed many high risk volunteers come back and resume their good work. Every week our cargo van drops off a batch of equipment for the team to refurbish, the van is then reloaded with all the equipment they finished processing the week before.
For many of the volunteers, this new workspace has not only kept them safe from the virus, it’s also cut their commute and allowed them to engage in a friendly environment. While they refurbish equipment, they like to sing along to songs on the radio, talk about their lives and relax with an audio book playing in the background.
One of the most rewarding parts about working in the MMEC is connecting with the clients when they’re given their new equipment. When asked what keeps him motivated, despite not being able to see the clients, Gerry said he thinks of all the lives we’ve touched over the past 10 years at Bridge and the many more to whom we can offer our support.
