June Volunteer Spotlight – Nate Alden

Nate first came to Bridge in 2008 when he heard about a spiritual retreat through his church, Holy Spirit Lutheran located in Kirkland. He attended and it was from that retreat that the Bible study known as Roots and Wings was birthed. That study group has continued to this day and Nate has been a primary leader of this study since 2016. Nate has also volunteered as a self-advocate and appeared as both a speaker as well as a participant in various videos and events to further the mission and vision of Bridge.

Although Nate is challenged with cerebral palsy, that does not stop him from giving his all when asked. As he shares, “Despite the fact that I only have use of half my body due to cerebral palsy, I have as complete a mind as any other human being. My biggest challenge in life comes from the lack of ability afforded me by this condition.”

But even with those limitations, Nate dreams of visiting other places- even as far as Paris as he also speaks French. He is a certified computer service technician and attended Bellevue College to learn this trade. He has also volunteered his tech services to Bridge over the years.

We would end this tribute to Nate as he shares his favorite Bible verse and the reasons it speaks to him so passionately:

For what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with your God. Micah 6:8

To this day, there’s something about that verse that I can’t quite put my finger on. Maybe it’s that we should always strive to do what is right and in the benefit of others. I and all humanity must learn to be receptive to the needs of others. But above all, we must be willing to accept the call to use our talents in God’s service and to do so without drawing attention to ourselves, but instead, to fulfill the vision God has for us.”

Beautiful words, Nate. And thank you for all you have given and continue to give to Bridge.
