Our Very Own Saint Rainier
The Meyer Medical Equipment Center is full of hard-working staff and volunteers, but there is one character who belongs in a category of her own.
Michelle has come to the Meyer Medical Equipment Center more than fifteen times in the past seven years. Half of the time it’s for her own mobility needs, but the other half of the time, she brings a new friend with her, acting as an ambassador for us and an advocate for them, to see if we can help with their mobility needs.
Nearly always we do.
Michelle spent most of her working years in D.C. as a government secretary and administrator for organizations like the Pentagon, USDA, HUD, Treasury Department and the Navy.
During those days, she was a true socialite, well-connected and always in the loop. On the weekends, she and her friends would dress to the nines, masquerading as press to mingle with the rich and famous.
Stories of her adventures and the well-known figures she met seemed like something out of a dream. One day she brought a book she published on her escapades, filled with pictures of her next to the people she’d told us about!
Over a hundred pages removed all doubt. With that knowledge, we began calling her “Saint Rainier.”
Like St. Rainier, Michelle enjoyed a lavish and wild youth, but eventually used that energy to uplift her beloved community. Her days are spent spreading cheer and using her power wheelchair to pick up groceries and shop for her friends!
Michelle possesses a rare ability to make friends wherever she goes. Each time she sees us she brings the same buoyant spirit and positive outlook with her, brightening our day. The amount of good she does for others has truly earned her the title of a saint.
