March Volunteer Spotlight: Chet Heisey
Not long after Chet Heisey and his wife, Geri, moved to Shoreline, he met Russ Quackenbush, who asked if he liked to work with his hands. He thought about it for a few seconds and responded, “Well, I liked painting houses with my dad when I was young because I always enjoyed how beautiful they looked when we were done so yes, I do.” Russ told Chet about volunteering at Bridge in the Meyer Medical Equipment Center and working on basic homecare medical equipment to ready it for reuse. Chet recalled how he had liked working on bicycles when he was a kid so it seemed to him that wheelchairs shouldn’t be much different. And that is how it all began for Chet.
That was six years ago, and he has continued volunteering faithfully once a week since he came onboard as a Bridge volunteer. Seeing firsthand the people Bridge has helped with their durable medical equipment needs convinced him right away that he is doing something worthwhile, and he has thoroughly enjoyed it.
Chet is a member of the Mennonite church and when asked what his favorite Bible verse is, he responded- the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible). He likes what it tells him about God and the way God works with people.
Chet’s supervisor, Gerry Barney, shared this about Chet: “He always comes in and leaves with a smile for everyone. In between, his good humor contributes to a sense of community among the others working at the Center. His steady effort has made a big difference over the years. Adding it up, Chet has probably worked on about 1,000 pieces of equipment, which means, thanks to him, likely 400+ people have been able to get the medical equipment they needed for themselves or someone they care for when they came to our Center. We can’t do what we do without volunteers like Chet.”
Chet- let’s make it another six years at the Meyer Medical Equipment Center!
