Russ Quackenbush – Longest Serving Volunteer at Bridge!
Russ has been volunteering in the Meyer Medical Equipment Center since 2006 – starting when Bridge was located in Kirkland and then transitioning with us to Bellevue. He is now volunteering in our Lynnwood repair shop which began operating in 2020.
Russ first began volunteering as a result of a pastor from Calvin Presbyterian Church who was encouraging the men of the church to volunteer at Bridge. That encouragement certainly took hold as we see Russ as the epitome of a faithful servant.
Russ has not only attracted many volunteers to the equipment center over the years, but he has also been a great teacher, showing new volunteers what needs done with the different types of equipment such as how to clean, adjust brakes, replace wheel bearings, etc. Teaching and training come naturally to Russ since he taught biology and related subjects for 37 years at Ballard, Bothell, and Kings High Schools, as well as coaching football (he played wide receiver for three years at WSU).
What he values most about volunteering is knowing the positive impact our work has in the lives of people with disabilities.
Russ shares a rich life with Sharon, his wife of 65 years. They enjoy time spent with their 2 children, 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. And they stay in touch with their many friends in Shoreline where they live. Brooklyn, one of his granddaughters, appears with him in the picture he shared with us. We are profoundly grateful for volunteers like Russ. Bridge could not accomplish what it does without the help of such dedicated and talented people like him. They inspire us to keep growing!
